Permanently looking past, looking right by, ignoring, those which allow them to live. It's a form of selfishness, actually. A way to reduce the world to that which is too far away to matter and to yourself. The people in the middle, the real people, they are immaterial.

Religion is like society's mudflap. It keeps the worst of the debris from fucking up people's windshields for a while, until enough accumulates. At that point, it just sort of fucks things up real bad for a while.
